Vision

At St Mary’s Primary School, we recognise the importance of a consistent approach to physical education in order to give children the tools and understanding required to make a positive impact in their own physical health and well-being. We believe a high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

In addition to this, St Mary’s recognises a multitude of other benefits of a consistent and cohesive PE curriculum; memory, focus, motor skills and mental health can all be vastly improved when regularly engaging in PE lessons. Building social skills and friendships during PE can help boost self-esteem, and in doing so improve a child's mental health and personal development.

Intent

The aims of PE are:

  • to enable children to develop and explore physical skills with increasing control and co-ordination;
  • to encourage children to work and play with others in a range of group situations;
  • to develop the way in which children perform skills and apply rules and conventions for different activities;
  • to increase children’s ability to use what they have learnt to improve the quality and control of their performance;
  • to teach children to recognise and describe how their bodies feel during exercise;
  • to develop the children’s enjoyment of physical activity through creativity and imagination;
  • to develop an understanding in children of how to succeed in a range of physical activities and how to evaluate their own success.
  • to develop communication and speaking and listening skills.
  • to provide children with a skillset which can be used and developed throughout their lives.
  • to allow all children to succeed and support each other in healthy competitive situations

Twinkl Move

Twinkl Move is an empowering PE scheme which is used to support PE from Reception through to Key Stage 2. As well as being in line with National Curriculum, the scheme aims to promote both physical and mental wellbeing.

Enrichment

As a healthy school, we promote a wide range of activities for pupils of all ages. The school provides a range of PE-related activities including football, multi-sports, gymnastics, netball and dance for children both during lunch times and through inter-school competition. These encourage children to further develop their skills in a range of the activity areas and fosters a love of sport in children. The school sends details of the current club activities to parents at the beginning of each term and will regularly invite children to take part in inter-school competitions.
