Welcome to Year 2!

Your teacher this year is Miss Begum with Miss Young and Miss Fenton.

Homework

Reading - Reading books will be given out and changed on Monday, children are asked to bring their books in each day, so that they can be checked. It is important that the children are answering questions about the text. We expect the children to read every night and have their record signed, please can children bring their book in each day so they have the opportunity to read with an adult.  

Learning Logs - Learning Logs will be given out every 2 weeks on a Friday. The children are given 2 weeks to complete their topic centered homework project and then we will have a Learning Log Gallery in class. They get to look at each others work and vote for their favorite one. The winning Learning Log will receive a prize.

PE

PE will take place on a THURSDAY. Children are able to come to school on this day in a plain black tracksuit, plain white t-shirt and plain trainers. 

Topic

Autumn 1

Our topic this term is The Great Fire of London! For our 'WOW' we will be going creating our very own 1660's Great Fire Of London houses. We will be setting them alight to replicate how the fire spread during The Great Fire of London. We will also focus on fire safety, and the changes of fire safety over a period of time. 

Our main focus be looking at is Samuel Pepy. This will help us to create our own diary entries, setting descriptions and fact files. 

Reading

Our whole class guided reading book is Vlad. We will look at the vocabulary, act out the story and work on reading with expression during in our daily lessons. 

We also have daily phonics sessions and we use Read, Write, Inc. 

Writing  

In Year 2 we will be looking at a range of text from fairy tales to factual books. The children will write stories, instructions, recounts, non-chronological reports, formal letters, character descriptions and diaries. The writing and reading will always link to the topic for that term. Handwriting is a big focus in year two and we will be starting to join our letters. Here are a list of tricky words we have to read and spell throughout the year.

Phonics

At St Mary's, we now follow the Read Write Inc Phonics Scheme. Children will be assessed every half term and placed into a group that suits their ability. Every phonics lesson starts with learning or revising a sound, and then reading a book which uses sounds they already know. Children then use these skills to read and spell independently.

Maths

In Year 2 we will be learning lots of new skills and deepening our understanding with our newly learnt mathematical knowledge. We will be learning our 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s times table and using different mathematical equipment. We will be adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying a range of numbers. We learn to name and describe the properties of 2D and 3D shapes and describe the symmetry. We will  also be learning to tell the time. 

At St. Mary's we follow the Power Maths programme, we have our own exercise book and math journal to work from. Power Maths helps us link maths lessons to real life situations and master our skills using different manipulatives (equipment).

Science

Our Science topic for this term is Human and Animal Survival. We will be exploring a range of different elements of Human survival, from Human and Animal life cycles, to healthy eating, and exercise. We will be exploring how this can impact us as Humans in general and why we need to have a healthy balance lifestyle in order to have a healthy life cycle.
