French

Vision

Children are taught specific skills, concepts and vocabulary in weekly French lesson with their class teacher and will follow the Primary Languages Network KS2 scheme of work. Gaps in knowledge are to be targeted in a number of key ways:

  • Supplementing the resources and lesson plans in the scheme with a bank of resources (e.g songs and rhymes) from a variety of sources including BBC French, YouTube and other internet resources
  • Where necessary, breaking down the lesson plans provided in the scheme into smaller chunks by teaching over a number of lessons, in order to ensure that a more comprehensive understanding is possible
  • Reading familiar stories to the children in French to give them an understanding of French culture
  • Additional songs and chants to reinforce and support learning

Intent

At St Mary’s CE, language teaching ensures that all children have the opportunity to:

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking question, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • Write at varying length, for different purposes, using the grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • Discover and develop an appreciation of writing in the language studied
  • Suggesting improvements to others work in both a respectful manner and whilst considering the views of others

Children will learn to:

  • Listen attentively and respectfully to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding
  • Explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes in order to the link the spelling, sound and meaning of words
  • Engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help
  • Speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structure
  • Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words or phrases
  • Present ideas and information orally
  • Read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing
  • Appreciate songs, stories, poems and rhymes in French
  • Broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary
  • Write words and phrases from memory
  • Describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing
  • Understand basic grammar (e.g. masculine and feminine), key patterns and features of the language and how these are similar or different to English

Enrichment

At St. Mary's, we believe that multi-lingualism is a superpower. We introduce pupils who are new to English to the language through a model of additive language learning, where we use their existing language knowledge to promote English progress. We offer pupils several instances throughout the year to share and celebrate their language abilities.
