Music

Our curriculum at St. Mary’s ensures a rigorous, challenging progression of learning across school, which ensures firm foundations for children to build on skills taught in previous years. This is at the core of our Christian vision of giving our children the best possible start in life.  St. Mary’s School aims to enable all children the opportunity to achieve their best academically, emotionally and socially.  We believe that music supports this in the following ways:

  • Music is a subject that helps to develop creativity, imagination, good listening skills, constructive criticism and the ability to express personal thoughts and feelings.
  • Music develops children’s ability to take part in practical activities, both individually and in groups, that encourages and cultivates an enjoyment of different genres of music.
  • Our Music curriculum provides breadth and balance, is relevant and engaging and is differentiated to match needs and abilities.

Intent

  • To ensure all staff, children, parents/carers and Governors are aware of the aims for learning and teaching Music at St Mary’s and that these are applied.
  • To promote a confident, positive attitude towards the learning and use of Music, making it an enjoyable experience.
  • To promote confidence and competence in the skills of speaking and listening; constructive feedback and sharing practical work.
  • To provide opportunities for the development of musical skills where relevant across the curriculum.
  • Children to develop an enjoyment of learning through practical activity, exploration and discussion.
  • Children to develop confidence and competence in the skills of speaking and listening, constructive feedback and sharing practical work.
  • Children to develop an understanding and appreciation of different types of music from around the world.

Worship through Music.

Every Monday, we join together to sing Christian hymns which define our Christian Value for that half-term. Working with Mrs. Reynolds, these hymns help us deepen our understanding of the Bible and our faith.

Enrichment.

  • We offer a free Choir Club on Monday evenings. Throughout the year, our Choir perform in church, at the weekend at Church services and take part in borough-wide showcases.
