Welcome to Year 5!
In Year 5, we work together as a class team to make sure our learning environment is a safe and welcoming place where children are encouraged to do their best.
Mrs Gillman is the Year 5 Class Teacher, Mr Carey and Miss Stansfield are the class Teaching Assistants. We work hard to support the children in all aspects of their development every day.
Mrs Gillman will be out of class every Monday and Thursday afternoon.
PE
PE will take place every Monday afternoon. Please send your child to school in the appropriate PE kit. This half-term the focus will be invasion games.
PE Kit:
A plain black tracksuit with no logos, plain white t-shirt and plain trainers. If you don't have a black jumper without logos, please just wear your school jumper, cardigan or fleece.
Homework
Homework will be given out on Monday and we ask that it is please returned by Friday morning. Children are able to attend a Friday morning homework drop-in session at the start of the school day. Support will be offered by Mr Carey with homework to reduce any challenges the children may have faced in completing their homework independently.
Learning Logs
Children will also be set regular learning logs linked to a particular topic we are exploring in school. They will be encouraged to create something and be as imaginative as possible.
Reading Books
Reading books will be changed every Wednesday. Children are asked to bring their books in each day, so we have the opportunity to read with them in school. It is important that the children are answering questions about the text after reading with an adult. We expect the children to read at least three times a week and have their reading record signed. Please sign it every time you read.
Reading regularly will support your child's learning across the curriculum.
Reading
In reading lessons we will be completing tasks using the VIPERS method which will support children's comprehension skills. The reading tasks will be linked to our key text. Our text this half-term is: Treason by Berlie Doherty. This a historical novel linked to our Tudors topic.
Writing
Our writing will be linked to our Tudors topic and will be largley influenced by our current text. We will explore a range of genres, including: diary entry, narrative and a biography.
Below are the Year 5/6 statutory spellings that children will need to familiarise themselves with. We will practise a range of these words during our handwriting sessions and for early morning work tasks to help the children apply them in their writing.
Topic
Our topic focus this half-term is The Tudors. We will explore the dynasty of monarchs that reigned during this period, learn about changes that took place within religion and also take part in a Tudor workshop and visit Ordsall Hall.
